I decided this week that I’d like to make a fun cake – without any particular purpose. Just to try it out, and maybe snap a few pictures. It was going really well, until the very end when I had to paint the fondant.
The cake is a rather simple one; it’s a doll cake, one selected by my little girl. And it was turning out really well. Everything was in place – I only had to add the mouth.
And when I tried to paint the mouth on, it bled. So I tried to fix it with a fondant mouth covering it. It bled some more when I added some water to fix the fondant to the cake.
It was really disappointing as the rest of the cake had turned out pretty well.
Not all of my experiments turn out poorly – at least not in the creation stage. Below is a cake I made for a family reunion a few years ago. I was so happy with how it turned out, and really excited to show it off. We hopped in the car, and started off for Souris, an hour from my house. On the way, my husband had to make a quick stop for some reason that I now can’t remember – maybe an animal in the road – and my cake went crashing forward. At least I had pictures to illustrate how it should have looked.
Thankfully, all the disasters to date have been cakes I’ve made for my own purposes, and not for some else’s child’s birthday.
Time for bed. goodnight.
